Social Justice

These are a few of the organizations that fight for poor and marginalized people and communities. Social justice advocacy gives voice to the voiceless and promotes a healthy and just society. From anti-war efforts to campaigns to end sexual violence, these groups protect and defend the rights of all citizens to enjoy the full expression of citizenship and civil rights. 

Advancement Project

Advancement Project is a next-generation, multi-racial civil rights organization rooted in the great human rights struggles for equality and justice. It exists to fulfill America’s promise of a caring, inclusive, and just democracy—utilizing innovative tools and strategies to strengthen social movements and achieve high-impact policy change.

Alliance for Justice

With a membership of more than 135 partner organizations, Alliance for Justice strengthens progressive movements through training and advocacy, while harnessing their collective power to transform state and federal courts.

iAmerica

iAmerica is the national immigrant justice campaign platform of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) created to offer informational tools and interactive opportunities for immigrants and their families in America to become full participants in U.S. democracy. It advocates, defends, and fights for the rights of all American families by uniting, strengthening, and activating civic and democratic participation to inspire real change.

America’s Voice

The mission of America’s Voice (AV) and America’s Voice Education Fund (AVEF) is to build the public support and political will needed to enact policy changes that secure freedom and opportunity for immigrants in America. Its primary goal: to win reforms that put 11 million undocumented Americans on a path to full citizenship.

American Atheists

By working with coalition partners within the atheist movement and across the political spectrum, American Atheists fights to improve public policy for all Americans, protect real religious freedom by defending the wall of separation between religion and government, and promote the acceptance and understanding of atheists.

American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)

The American Civil Liberties Union was founded in 1920 and serves as the guardian of liberty within the United States. It works in the courts, legislatures, and communities to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to all people in this country by the U.S. Constitution and law.

American Federation of Teachers

The American Federation of Teachers is a union of professionals that champions fairness; democracy; economic opportunity; and high-quality public education, healthcare and public services for our students, their families and our communities. It is committed to advancing these principles through community engagement, organizing, collective bargaining and political activism, and especially through the work of its members.

The Arc

This nonprofit promotes and protects the human rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and actively supports their full inclusion and participation in the community throughout their lifetimes.

Association for Women’s Rights in Development

The Association for Women’s Rights in Development (AWID) is a global, feminist, membership, movement-support organization that for more than 40 years has been a part of an ecosystem of feminist movements working to achieve gender justice and women’s human rights worldwide.

Black Lives Matter

Black Lives Matter (BLM) is a decentralized social and political movement founded in 2013 in response to the acquittal of Trayvon Martin’s murderer. Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation, Inc. is a global organization in the United States, U.K., and Canada whose mission is to eradicate white supremacy and build local power to intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes. It works to combat and counter acts of violence, create space for Black imagination and innovation, and promote Black joy.

Campaign Legal Center

The nonpartisan Campaign Legal Center advances democracy through law at the federal, state and local levels, fighting for every American’s rights to responsive government and a fair opportunity to participate in and affect the democratic process.

Center for American Progress

The Center for American Progress is an independent, nonpartisan policy institute dedicated to improving the lives of all Americans through bold, progressive ideas, as well as strong leadership and concerted action. Its aim is not just to change the conversation, but to change the country.

Color of Change

Color of Change leads campaigns that build real power for Black communities. It challenges injustice, holds corporate and political leaders accountable, commissions game-changing research on systems of inequality, and advances solutions for racial justice that can transform the world.

Communist Party USA

Founded in 1919, the Communist Party USA seeks to build socialism in the United States and replace capitalism. It opposes imperialism, and supports and advocates for labor rights, environmental justice, social programs, individual freedoms, and an end to poverty, unemployment, and discrimination.

Council on American-Islamic Relations

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is a nonprofit, grassroots civil rights and advocacy organization, and the largest Muslim civil liberties group in the United States, with affiliate offices nationwide. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, and empower American Muslims.

Democracy Fund

This independent, nonpartisan, private foundation confronts deep-rooted challenges in American democracy while defending against new threats. Since 2014, it has made grants of more than $275 million in support of those working to strengthen U.S. democracy through the pursuit of a vibrant and diverse public square, free and fair elections, effective and accountable government, and a just and inclusive society.

Foundation Against Intolerance and Racism

The Foundation Against Intolerance and Racism (FAIR) is a nonprofit is dedicated to defending civil rights and liberties guaranteed to each individual, including freedom of speech and expression, equal protection under the law, and the right to personal privacy. It advocates for individuals who are threatened or persecuted for speech or held to different set of rules for language or conduct based on their skin color, ancestry, or other immutable characteristics. It supports respectful disagreement, and believes bad ideas are best confronted with good ideas—and never with dehumanization, deplatforming, or blacklisting. 

Future Forward USA Action

This nonprofit's mission is to help rebuild America’s middle class and American democracy by advancing new ideas and fresh perspectives, and supporting Democratic policies and candidates.

Generation Progress

Generation Progress is a national advocacy and education organization that promotes progressive solutions to the political and social issues that matter to young people between the ages of 18 and 35. It strives to uplift the voices and leadership of young people across the country to ensure that their perspectives and needs are represented in policy-making spaces at all levels of government. Generation Progress is housed within the Center for American Progress, making it the only youth advocacy organization within a progressive think tank.

Highlander Center

This community organization serves as a catalyst for grassroots organizing and movement building in Appalachia and the South. It works with people fighting for justice, equality and sustainability, supporting their efforts to take collective action to shape their own destiny.

Human Rights First

Established in 1978, Human Rights First’s mission is to ensure that the United States is a global leader on human rights. The organization works in the United States and abroad to promote respect for human rights and the rule of law.

Human Rights Campaign

By inspiring and engaging individuals and communities, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) strives to end discrimination against LGBTQ+ people and realize a world that achieves fundamental fairness and equality for all. It envisions a world where lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people plus community members who use different language to describe identity are ensured equality and embraced as full members of society at home, at work, and in every community.

Immigrant Legal Resource Center

The mission of the Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC) is to work with and educate immigrants, community organizations, and the legal sector to continue to build a democratic society that values diversity and the rights of all people.

Kids in Need of Defense

Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) envisions a world in which children’s rights and well-being are protected as they migrate alone in search of safety. It works to ensure that no child appears in immigration court without high-quality legal representation; advances laws, policies, and practices that ensure children’s protection and uphold their right to due process and fundamental fairness; and promotes in countries of origin, transit, and destination durable solutions to child migration that are grounded in the best interests of the child to help ensure that no child is forced to involuntarily migrate.

Knight First Amendment Institute

The Knight First Amendment Institute defends the freedoms of speech and the press in the digital age through strategic litigation, research, and public education. Its aim is to promote a system of free expression that is open and inclusive, that broadens and elevates public discourse, and that fosters creativity, accountability, and effective self-government.

Know Your IX

This is a youth- and survivor-led project of Advocates for Youth that empowers students to end gender-based and sexual violence in schools. It provides education and resources to assist students and survivors in this mission, and better understand their options under Title IX.

Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law

The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization, formed in 1963 at the request of President John F. Kennedy to mobilize the nation’s leading lawyers as agents for change in the Civil Rights Movement. Today, the Lawyers’ Committee uses legal advocacy to achieve racial justice, fighting inside and outside the courts to ensure that Black people and other people of color have the voice, opportunity, and power to make the promises of our democracy real. The Lawyers’ Committee implements its mission and objectives by marshaling the pro bono resources of the bar for litigation, public policy, advocacy, and other forms of service by lawyers to the cause of civil rights.

League of United Latin American Citizens

The mission of the League of United Latin American Citizens is to advance the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, housing, health, and civil rights of the Hispanic population of the United States.

Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights

The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights is a diverse coalition of more than 240 organizations that for more than 75 years have wielded their collective power to win policies that make America more fair and free. It champions women’s rights, LGBTQ rights, immigrant rights, workers’ rights, and disability rights, among other causes.

Ms. Foundation for Women

This nonprofit works to build women’s collective power in the United States by investing in and strengthening the capacity of women-led movements to advance meaningful social, cultural, and economic change.

National Action Network

National Action Network is one of the leading civil rights organizations in the United States, with chapters throughout the entire country. Founded in 1991 by Reverend Al Sharpton, NAN works within the spirit and tradition of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to promote a modern civil rights agenda that includes the fight for one standard of justice, decency, and equal opportunities for all people regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, citizenship, criminal record, economic status, gender, gender expression, or sexuality.

National Black Justice Collective (NBJC)

This civil rights organization is dedicated to empowering Black lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and same gender loving (LGBTQ+/SGL) people, including those living with HIV/AIDS. It seeks to end racism, homophobia, and LGBTQ+/SGL bias and stigma, and supports Black individuals, families, and communities in strengthening the bonds and bridging the gaps between the movements for racial justice and LGBTQ+/SGL equity.

National Congress of American Indians

Founded in 1944, the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) is the oldest, largest, and most representative American Indian and Alaska Native organization serving the broad interests of tribal governments and communities. Its mission: to protect and enhance treaty and sovereign rights, and secure their traditional laws, cultures, and ways of life for descendants. Toward this end, the group promotes a common understanding of the rightful place of tribes in the family of American governments, and works to improve the quality of life for Native communities and peoples.

National Council of Negro Women

The National Council of Negro Women (NCNW)'s mission is to lead, empower and advocate for women of African descent, their families and communities. It is comprised of 330 campus and community-based sections and 33 national women’s organizations that enlighten, inspire, and connect more than 2 million women and men. Founded in 1935 by Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, an influential educator and activist, for more than 50 years it was led by Dr. Dorothy Height as president. It promotes education; encourages entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and economic stability; educates women about health; supports healthcare access; fosters civic engagement; and advocates for sound public policy and social justice.

National Immigration Law Center

Established in 1979, the National Immigration Law Center (NILC) is one of the leading organizations in the United States exclusively dedicated to defending and advancing the rights of immigrants with low income. It believes that all people who live in America should have the opportunity to achieve their full potential. The nonprofit has been at the forefront of many of the country’s greatest challenges when it comes to immigration issues, and plays a major leadership role in addressing the real-life impact of policies that affect the ability of low-income immigrants to prosper and thrive.

National Lawyers Guild

Established in 1937, the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) is the nation’s oldest and largest progressive bar association and was the first one in the United States to be racially integrated. Its mission is to use law for the people, uniting lawyers, law students, legal workers, and jailhouse lawyers to function as an effective force in the service of the people by valuing human rights and the rights of ecosystems over property interests. This is achieved through the work of its members and numerous organizational committees, caucuses and projects, reflecting a wide spectrum of intersectional issues. Guild members effectively network and hone their legal skills in order to help create change at the local, regional, national, and international levels.

National Organization for Women

As the grassroots arm of the women’s movement, the National Organization for Women is dedicated to its multi-issue and multi-strategy approach to women’s rights, and is the largest organization of feminist grassroots activists in the United States. NOW has hundreds of chapters and hundreds of thousands of members and activists in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Since its founding in 1966, NOW’s purpose is to take action through intersectional grassroots activism to promote feminist ideals, lead societal change, eliminate discrimination, and achieve and protect the equal rights of all women and girls in all aspects of social, political, and economic life.

National Urban League

The National Urban League is a historic civil rights organization dedicated to economic empowerment, equality, and social justice. Founded in 1910 and headquartered in New York City, the Urban League collaborates at the national and local levels with community leaders, policymakers, and corporate partners to elevate the standards of living for African Americans and other historically underserved groups.

National Women’s Law Center

The National Women’s Law Center fights for gender justice—in the courts, in public policy, and in society—working across the issues that are central to the lives of women and girls. It uses the law in all its forms to change culture and drive solutions to the gender inequity that shapes our society and to break down the barriers that harm all of us—especially women of color, LGBTQ people, and low-income women and families. For 50 years, it has been on the leading edge of every major legal and policy victory for women.

The New Agenda

The New Agenda is a 501(c)(4) organization dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls by bringing about systemic change in the media, at the workplace, at school and at home.

Native American Rights Fund

Since 1970, the Native American Rights Fund (NARF) has provided legal assistance to Native American tribes, organizations, and individuals nationwide who might otherwise have gone without adequate representation. Its mission is to hold governments accountable and fight to protect Native American rights, resources, and lifeways through litigation, legal advocacy, and legal expertise.

New Poor People’s Campaign

In 1968, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and many others called for a “revolution of values” in America. They sought to build a broad, fusion movement that could unite poor and impacted communities across the country. Their name was a direct cry from the underside of history: The Poor People’s Campaign. Today, the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival has picked up this unfinished work. From Alaska to Arkansas, the Bronx to the border, people are coming together to confront the interlocking evils of systemic racism, poverty, ecological devastation, militarism and the war economy, and the distorted moral narrative of religious nationalism. It is a movement striving to shift the moral narrative, impact policies and elections at every level of government, and build lasting power for poor and impacted people. 

Open Society Foundations

Founded by George Soros, Open Society Foundations works with organizations and individuals who seek to address profound racial, economic, and political inequalities, while funding efforts to prepare for the policy challenges of the future. It is the world's largest private funder of independent groups working for rights, equity, and justice.

OCA-Asian Pacific American Advocates

The Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA) was founded in 1973 to create a unified voice for Chinese Americans in the civil rights movement. In 2013, the organization rebranded to OCA-Asian Pacific American Advocates and advocates on behalf of all Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders. Touching hundreds of thousands of AAPIs each year, OCA National Center works with its organizational partners, members, chapters, and supporters to empower the next generation of leaders.

Point of Pride

Since 2016, this nonprofit has provided trans people with access to life-changing, gender-affirming health and wellness services—helping the most vulnerable members of this community feel seen and supported.

Prison Policy Initiative

The nonprofit, nonpartisan Prison Policy Initiative produces cutting-edge research to expose the broader harm of mass criminalization, and then sparks advocacy campaigns to create a more just society.

Race Forward

For more than 40 years, Race Forward has worked to dismantle structural racism by building collective community power and transforming institutions. It helps to operationalize strategies that drive sustainable change towards racial justice at all levels of society.

Rainbow PUSH Coalition

Rainbow PUSH Coalition (RPC) is an international human and civil rights organization founded by Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. RPC seeks to empower people through the effective use of grassroots advocacy, issue orientation, and connections between the greater community and the disenfranchised. RPC also supports research on key policy issues, collects data on nonpartisan-related initiatives, and organizes seminars and public awareness campaigns on a variety of policy concerns. RPC advances the democratic principles of civic virtue and human rights in order to improve life opportunities for those who have been marginalized and disaffected.

Secular Woman

The mission of Secular Woman is to amplify the voice, presence, and influence of non-religious women. It envisions a future in which women without supernatural beliefs have the opportunities and resources they need to participate openly and confidently as respected voices of leadership in the secular community and every aspect of society.

Southern Coalition for Social Justice

Southern Coalition for Social Justice partners with communities of color and economically disadvantaged communities in the South to defend and advance their political, social, and economic rights through the combination of legal advocacy, research, organizing, and communications.

Southern Poverty Law Center

Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is a catalyst for racial justice in the South and beyond, working in partnership with communities to dismantle white supremacy, strengthen intersectional movements, and advance the human rights of all people.

The Sanders Institute

A vital democracy requires an informed electorate, civil discourse, and bold ideas. The mission of The Sanders Institute is to revitalize democracy by actively engaging individuals, organizations and the media in the pursuit of progressive solutions to economic, environmental, racial, and social justice issues.

Truth Wins Out

Truth Wins Out is a nonprofit organization that educates the world on the harm caused by destructive “ex-gay” conversion programs, while fighting to eliminate anti-LGBTQ prejudice and discrimination. It works to advance liberty and democracy, protect the rights of LGBTQ people and other minorities, combat religious extremism, and fight against the spread of disinformation.

UltraViolet

UltraViolet is a women-led gender justice organization with an online community of more than a million members nationwide. Together, they take action to disrupt and end the everyday sexism, misogynoir and transmisogyny that women and gender-expansive people face. The group fights attacks against women, works toward a proactive vision of equality, and demands accountability from individuals, the media, and institutions that perpetuate sexist narratives or seek to limit the rights, safety, and economic security of women. 

UnidosUS

UnidosUS, previously known as NCLR (National Council of La Raza), is the nation’s largest Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization. Through its combination of expert research, advocacy programs, and affiliate network of nearly 300 community-based organizations across the United States and Puerto Rico, UnidosUS simultaneously challenges the social, economic, and political barriers that affect Latinos at the national and local levels.

United Negro College Fund

United Negro College Fund (UNCF)’s mission is to build a robust and nationally-recognized pipeline of under-represented students who, because of UNCF support, become highly-qualified college graduates, and to ensure its network of member institutions is a respected model of best practice in moving students to and through college.

United We Dream

United We Dream is the largest immigrant youth-led community in the country. It creates welcoming spaces for young people regardless of immigration status to support, engage, and empower them to make their voice heard and win.

Waging Nonviolence

Waging Nonviolence is a nonprofit media organization dedicated to providing original reporting and expert analysis of social movements around the world. With a commitment to accuracy, transparency and editorial independence, it examines today’s most crucial issues by shining a light on those who are organizing for just and peaceful solutions.

Women’s Media Center

In 2005, Jane Fonda, Robin Morgan and Gloria Steinem founded the Women’s Media Center (WMC), a progressive, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization working to raise the visibility, viability and decision-making power of women and girls in media and, thereby, ensuring that their stories get told and their voices are heard. To reach those necessary goals, it strategically uses an array of interconnected channels and platforms to transform not only the media landscape but also a culture in which women’s and girls’ voices, stories, experiences and images are neither sufficiently amplified nor placed on par with the voices, stories, experiences and images of men and boys.

Young Invincibles

Young Invincibles is a national nonprofit advocacy organization committed to creating change by amplifying the voices of young adults ages 18 to 34 and expanding economic opportunities.
