Max Notes

It’s happening already. Don’t do it. Don’t fall for it. Gavin Newsom is hardly a champion of left-leaning causes. Leave him in California if that’s what Californians want, but let’s not pretend that he’s something he’s not just because he’s an outstanding debater and online troll.

Newsom has been angling for the presidency since entering politics. His personal life is littered with scandals. He has maintained an image of working class defender while quietly vetoing bills that were pro-union. He holds himself out as an environmentalist while frustrating environmental advocates by cozying up to oil companies. He professes to be an ally despite a congenial conversation with Charlie Kirk in which he said trans athletes competing is “deeply unfair.” He signed a bill to curb Gaza protests on college campuses.

But those memes! The “Trump all cap voice” on X. The clapbacks. He’s soooo good at it.

Yeah, that’s because he wants Trump’s job so he’s pandering to liberals who are willing to close the door behind them on the marginalized so long as we replace Trump.

Would I be excited to swap hair product recommendations with him over a beer? Sure. But fuck off if you want to be my president. I’ll have more to say in the coming weeks on this but it feels like a pressing issue right now because he’s trolling Trump so well and so hard that it has Republicans losing their minds. But he falls squarely in the Buttigieg camp from where I sit. Just another blow with the wind, say anything to get elected, milquetoast white guy willing to sell out the environment, the trans community, protestors and unions.

Other things I’m obsessing over…

    • It’s a family affair. DDL came out of retirement to star in a feature directed by his son.

    • That time Obama told everyone to learn computer science and coding. A lot can happen in a decade.

    • Sam and Emma dismantling Hakeem Jeffries.

Killer Left Take of the Week

KLTW goes to Chris Hedges. Hedges is one of those writers worthy of the KLTW on a weekly basis. He is on a short list of writers who most impacted my worldview. (If only his writing had more of an impact on my own. Professional jealousy, thy name is Max.) This essay on the situation in Gaza has the usual historical context that only Hedges can provide, along with first person accounts of his time working in Gaza City and reporting on other modern day genocides. It’s a sobering account and a must read.

    Trump is Looting the Treasury.

Time Is Running Out To Prevent Trump From Becoming the World’s Shadow Central Bank.

Trump smiling maniacally with USD1 coins over his eyes. The Treasury Department building is visible in the background

Donald Trump has laid the groundwork to become one of the wealthiest people on the planet by personally making money from every dollar printed in the United States. And the worse the economy gets, the more money he stands to make. The House has already passed three crypto bills that would make this potential a reality by allowing the Trump family to control the global stablecoin market. Now it’s up to the Senate. It’s a wild story that the media won’t report on because they don’t get it. But some very powerful people have figured it out and now the race is on to stop Trump from becoming the shadow central banker to the world.

Here’s a snippet from the pod:

Max: Trump isn’t just some crypto cowboy. He’s in charge of the world’s largest economy for another three years. In just the first few months of his administration he’s been given a blank check from the Supreme Court to pretty much evade every rule, law or norm associated with the office of the presidency. So he’s clear to pursue personal gain without fear of running afoul of U.S. regulations or the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution.

    Chart of the Week

This chart shows the U.S. Leading Economic Index (LEI) 6-month growth rate from 2000 to July 2025, with shaded areas marking official recessions. The LEI has been in negative territory for the past six months and recently triggered a recession signal in July 2025, similar to patterns that preceded previous recessions in 2001, 2008, and 2020. The chart demonstrates how sustained negative growth in the LEI and low diffusion index values have historically been reliable predictors of economic downturns.

Just call it already. This is getting old. Max’s broken record time: We’ve been in a recession since 2008. It’s the way we track “technical” recessions that provides cover for what’s happening in the broader economy. This “on-again/off-again” bullshit skews the headlines and makes it seem like there’s some sort of existential battle in the economy. There’s no battle. It’s not working, and hasn’t for a very long time.

We Can Hold Both Thoughts in Our Heads

I’ve long held that the greatest threat to Jews is the leadership of the Likud and Otzma Yehudit parties in Israel. The systematic annihilation of Palestinians has turned much of the world against the state of Israel and the decades-long effort to tether Zionism to Judaism is actualizing this belief. The other side effect is that it provides cover for clear antisemitism to exist in daylight without retribution so long as western powers continue to defend the barbarism of the world’s only Jewish state.

    From the article:

“It is important to be really clear about what all of these antisemites linked to Trump and the people around him have been accused of. It’s not that they used outdated language that we now think of as offensive, said things that could be construed as antisemitic, made remarks long ago that they have since disavowed, or criticized Israel and its treatment of the Palestinians in ways that are now cynically being redefined as antisemitic. No, they have said explicitly, unambiguously antisemitic things, recently, often on video, and are frequently open and unembarrassed about their bigotry toward Jews.”

There Are Shitty Companies. And Then There’s JBS.

As if the protein industry isn’t damaging the planet enough, meatpacking giant JBS is headed for public trading on the New York Stock Exchange. This will only supercharge the growth of one of the most notoriously harmful and corrupt companies in the United States. And that’s saying a lot. Like, a lot.

    From the article:

“JBS has built its empire not through innovation or sustainability, but through exploitation. Price fixing, child labor, wage theft, bribery, tax avoidance, deforestation, animal cruelty—these are not isolated scandals. They are core ingredients of JBS’ business model. And while many corporations would work to correct and address their abuses, JBS has repeatedly treated legal penalties and reputational damage as just another cost of doing business.”

    Bad Science

The field of gynecology is rooted in experiments on enslaved women. COVID disproportionately killed Black Americans. The hundreds of years between these two scientific and medical events is littered with examples of disparities in scientific funding, research and outcomes. The Trump administration seeks to keep it there.

    From the article:

“The current administration is not attacking all science equally. Certain areas, including climate science, vaccine research, and anything remotely connected to DEI, are taking a disproportionate hit. These are not random choices, but rather targeted efforts to dismantle any knowledge production that challenges a world order dominated by capitalism, colonialism, white supremacy, and social inequities.”

“The working homeless. In a country where hard work and determination are supposed to lead to success, there is something scandalous about this phrase. But skyrocketing rents, low wages, and a lack of tenant rights have produced a startling phenomenon: People with full-time jobs cannot keep a roof over their head, especially in America’s booming cities, where rapid growth is leading to catastrophic displacement. These families are being forced into homelessness not by a failing economy but a thriving one.”

    Unf*cker Comment of the Week

    From @lewis2553:

“The mark of the beast was prophesied 2000 years ago, and it is coming. Neither Democrats nor Republicans will prevent it. The best you can do is to repent of sin and become a follower of Jesus Christ. Your videos will not change anything. All these events are just preparation for the fulfillment of the prophecy, but you don’t have to be here when it happens. You can be with Jesus instead.”

Finally, some direction. Guess I’ll stop.

    Progressive Corner

Progressive Organization of the Week: All On The Line.

“This campaign is driven by grassroots organizers who want to make a lasting impact. Whether you care about making sure everyone has access to quality, affordable health care, achieving equal pay, reducing the gun violence that plagues our schools and communities, protecting voting rights, or dealing with the urgent threat of climate change, there is a fundamental structural barrier that prevents progress on these issues: manipulated electoral maps drawn with surgical precision by politicians to preserve their party’s political power and silence the will of the people. This practice—gerrymandering—is when politicians pick their voters instead of voters picking their elected officials and it impacts communities across the nation. The All On The Line campaign is fighting against gerrymandering and pushing for fair maps in redistricting.”
